The Tale of the Middle-Aged Man Who Slept in a Princess Bed
My wife and I made a choice to co-sleep with our kids, which means it was my wife's idea, but it was okay with me. We read that co-sleeping produced stronger bonds, made breastfeeding easier, etc., etc.,which is all well and good, except for one thing. I no longer sleep in my own bed.
Boo (not real name), the two-year old and TOTAL BED HOG, sleeps in our bed, a queen size. There just enough room for the three of us. I could buy a king, but then we could not have other furniture in the room. I now like my clothes in a dresser and not spread out on the floor as I did age 13-24. Queenie (not real name), six years old, starts off in her own bed, but then migrates to our bed in the middle of the night for reasons that are not clear to anyone. When we talk about it, I ask her to stay in her own bed and she says, "Okay," and then does it again. With four in our bed, I have to sleep on my side, straight as an arrow. I'd do really well in those Japanese sleep hotels with the coffin sized rooms.

Now, I could move Queenie back to her bed, but, like the Terminator, she'll keep coming back, OR she'll insist that I stay with her until she falls asleep again, which means that I get squeezed into sharing a twin. She has high needs. Isn't that precious? Couldn't you just hang yourself?

In the end, I sleep in her bed, princess canopy and all, because it's just easier. And that, my friends is the entrancing Tale of the Middle-Aged Man Who Slept in a Princess Bed.

I miss my wife.
